This carving is based on the space-filling property of Rhombic Dodecahedra. One in the center, 12 around that and then the layer of 42 that this carving is based on. You can theoretically keep stacking on concentric layer upon layer of more and more equal sized rhombic dodecahedra, and your stackings will infinitely approach a cubeoctahedron, making the faces smoother and smoother.
